  • Vote Comet Skateboards for $50K Grant from Pepsi

    Comet Skateboards is trying for a $50,000 grant from Pepsi in the new Pepsi Refresh Project. Pepsi is looking for "people and non-profits with ideas that will have a positive impact." You submit your idea, and people can vote on it. At the end of the month the top ideas get grants for thousands of dollars. Comet Skateboards is in the running for the $50,000 grant to improve the Oakland and Ithaca Skateparks, and to run a mentorship and cultural exchange program. You can see a breakdown of how they plan to use the money, and what their program entails on the Pepsi Refresh Everything website.

    Thank you Huntington Beach teenager Douglas Young, for ruining things for the rest of us. This was reported earlier this week in the Orange County Register - "A Huntington Beach teen got $30,000 from the city because he fell off his waveboard in a public alley, breaking two bones in his right forearm, officials said."     On Sunday, January 17th, the youth of Long Beach, California got a brand new facility where they can exercise their passions and distract themselves from the hardships of living in what 1st District Councilman Robert Garcia called “one of the most dense and poor communities in Long Beach.” The new skatepark, which replaced existing equipment and expanded upon the site’s footprint, is a 8,000 sq. ft. hybrid style skatepark, consisting of TrueRide ramps and pre-cast Spohncrete features.     This girl poor girl obviously didn’t listen to the instructions very well when the guy next to her was explaining the fine art of dropping in on a skateboard ramp. My guess is that she probably chipped a tooth at a bare minimum if not worse! Now if she did manage to walk away from that faceplant unscathed, then I am sure we will see her back sometime in the future. If that is the case we hope that she leans back just a little bit more so she can roll away from it next time. Extreme videos

    Skateboard-City.com's own Roch seems to be in a spot of bother and is selling off his decks from SonoQuattro Skateboards for $29.99 a pop for a full colour graphic deck. There's currently only the one graphic on offer (pictured right), but from the sounds of the review the decks are pretty good quality, and it's always worth supporting small independent companies trying to make it big in the skate industry. However a lot of people on this forum seem to only judge shoes by the brand, rather than the quality of the product. If the shoe doesn't have three stripes, or a swoosh on the side, its written off as “gay”. I haven't seen many people wear Airspeeds in person, so I had no idea how they skated.     So I checked out the Grammy Awards last Sunday, and besides noticing how rad Lady Gaga is. Go ahead give me some s--t for it, but I support the Gaga, piano duet with Elton John; so sick. Anyway, I also noticed TravisBarker was wearing a Thrasher t-shirt as he played drums for the Little Wayne and Eminem song. Skateboarding made it to the Grammy's, and a real skate company none the less.

They do this pretty much so they don't have to go to the tradeshows, which kickoff tomorrow down in San Diego.     I rode the Electra Townie up to Sprouts grocery store today. We are lucky enough to have a Sprouts, Natural Grocers,  Whole Foods, and HEB Central Market nearby, was well as some more traditional grocery stores. Sprouts is the groovy store that is closest to us – an easy 1.75 mile ride through the neighborhood. My mission tonight was simply to buy stuff to eat for lunch next week, plus a few other items. Stuff to make smoothies, etc. Sprouts has fairly good prices. The one thing about these stores that still kind of bothers me is that they still sell products that are way…

    I just finished watching Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media. I saw the film back in 1992 when it was released, and was quite impressed. The film holds up quite well. I would love to see an update done that accounts for 1)the increasing concentration of major media power as well as the blatant propaganda of Fox News (as opposed the more subtle propaganda of the other major TV networks), 2)the growth of conservative talk radio, and 3)the growth of the internet — is it a democratizing force or simply a source of intellectual clutter? Or somewhere in between. It is very cool…

    It has been a while without any posts. The last couple of months (the last year, really) have been tough. Family illness prevented me from really tending my gardens, practicing aikido, doing much skateboarding, etc. However, I was doing what I wanted to be doing more than anything — helping — so it is all good. In that last couple of months, however, I have gotten back to aikido practice, and I’m getting ready to get the gardens ready for Spring. And I’ve been skating a bit too. I am preparing for my 4th kyu test at aikido, coming on Feb. 20. More blog entries will…
